Phuket Sandbox Extension Details
Phuket Sandbox was a Model introduced by the Thai Government by both the Ministry of Tourism and the ministry of Public Health in order to revive the Inbound tourism during the COVID 19 Pandemic. This Model took place in July 2021 and started only in Phuket island. That was a replacement of the requirement ASQ Quarantine model that took place from June 2020 till the introduction of Phuket Sandbox Model.
All Passengers who arrived to Thailand under the Phuket Sandbox Model were required to stay on the island for at least 14 days before being able to leave to any other province in Thailand. During these 14 days, guests were required to undergo 3 PCR tests and they all have to be negative in order that they become able to leave the island and to move to another province.
The Thai Government then has introduced something called the Phuket Sandbox Model Extension which was a Model allowing the Tourists to split their stay between Phuket and another destination for 7 nights each, then become able to travel to any other destination around Thailand. Among the Destinations that used to be included in the Phuket Sandbox Extension there was Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Krabi, Khao Lak and Phi Phi island.
This Model was different than the Samui Plus and Samui extra Plus Model that were similar to Phuket sandbox Model. It was called sealed route which means that the Guests were not able to leave or go out of Specific locations when in Thailand.
Did this model Succeed?
Unfortunately, People who applied for this model were very limited as most of the people who traveled to Thailand under the Phuket Sandbox were Expats looking for solutions to come back to Thailand and they were not traveling for Vacations or for leisure.
