3 Best Beaches Near Bangkok – Our Top Recommendations for a Short Beach Escape

Many travelers visiting Thailand have limited time and spend most of their stay in Bangkok. One of the most common questions we receive at Royal Vacation is whether there is a beach destination worth visiting near Bangkok — without the need to take a domestic flight to the southern islands.

Our answer is always yes.

There are several excellent beach destinations located just a few hours’ drive from Bangkok. Each one offers a different experience in terms of resort quality, water clarity, atmosphere, and overall vibe. When we make recommendations, we don’t use a “one-size-fits-all” approach. We always listen carefully to our clients’ preferences — whether they are traveling as couples, families, honeymooners, or leisure groups — before suggesting the most suitable destination.

Below are the 3 beach destinations we most frequently recommend, based on our operational experience and client feedback.

Koh Kood Thailand island Hopping

1) Koh Samet — Best Beach Near Bangkok (Our #1 Pick)

Koh Samet is our number one recommendation and personally our favorite beach destination near Bangkok. In many cases, it can compete with some of the famous southern islands in terms of beach quality and atmosphere. That is why we include Koh Samet in several of our ready-made itineraries, including honeymoon and Central Thailand getaway programs.

Ao prao Resort Koh Samet

Reaching Koh Samet from Bangkok is very straightforward. The journey involves approximately 2.5 hours by road from Bangkok to Rayong Province, followed by a short boat transfer to the island.

The boat ride duration depends on the type of boat:

  • Speedboat: Around 10 minutes
  • Traditional ferry boat: Around 25 minutes

We almost always recommend private speedboat transfers, especially for families and couples. The price difference is minimal, but the comfort, flexibility, and time saved make a big difference — and clients avoid waiting for fixed ferry schedules.

Some resorts such as Ao Prao Beach Resort and Le Vimarn also provide scheduled shuttle boat services for their guests.

Although Koh Samet has many beaches, we usually recommend choosing between these two:

Ao Prao Beach
This is our most recommended beach on the island. It is a small, exclusive bay with only three resorts, creating a more private and organized atmosphere. It is ideal for honeymooners, couples, and families looking for a quiet escape focused on relaxation, swimming, and nature.

Sai Kaew Beach
We recommend Sai Kaew for travelers who want some nightlife and evening activities. Guests staying here can enjoy beach walks at night, local night markets, bars, and light entertainment. While nightlife exists, it is still very relaxed compared to destinations such as Phuket or Pattaya.

For Koh Samet, we always advise early reservations. The number of high-quality resorts is limited, and availability becomes very tight during weekends and high season. The island is extremely popular among Thai locals for weekend getaways, which causes frequent sell-outs.

If we rank all nearby beach destinations based on location, water clarity, and overall atmosphere, Koh Samet remains our clear number one choice.

2) Pattaya & Jomtien Beach — Practical & Well-Connected Option

Pattaya still carries an outdated reputation in the minds of many travelers. However, from our experience operating there regularly, the destination has evolved significantly and now offers many family-friendly and couple-friendly experiences.

Koh Larn Pattaya

When offering hotel options, we usually divide Pattaya into three main zones:

  • Pattaya Beach Road Area
  • Jomtien
  • Na Klua

Pattaya Beach Road Area
This is the area we recommend the least. It is very busy, crowded, and not suitable for a relaxing beach stay. Most hotels are not beachfront, and guests need to cross the road to access public beaches where umbrellas and chairs are rented separately. We see this area as suitable for a short city visit or nightlife exploration — not for accommodation.

Na Klua & Jomtien Areas
These are the areas we mainly recommend. They are quieter, more relaxed, and home to many beachfront resorts with private beach access. Guests can swim comfortably and enjoy resort-style holidays without city congestion.

The seawater in Pattaya itself is swimmable but not among the clearest in Thailand. However, one of Pattaya’s biggest advantages is its proximity to nearby islands.

From Pattaya, guests can easily visit Koh Larn (Coral Island) — a popular day-trip destination offering clear water, snorkeling, and beach activities. Koh Larn also has a small number of hotels for travelers who prefer staying overnight, but availability is limited and sells out quickly during weekends and holidays. We always advise booking well in advance.

Due to accessibility, infrastructure, and variety of activities, we place Pattaya as our number two recommendation among beach destinations near Bangkok.

3) Hua Hin — Luxury Resort Escape

Hua Hin

Hua Hin is an excellent option for travelers who prioritize luxury resort stays and relaxed beachfront vibes.

Located around 3 hours by road from Bangkok, Hua Hin is ideal for guests who want to spend most of their time inside their resort, enjoying pools, spas, restaurants, and beachfront facilities.

The destination offers many high-end international brands such as Mövenpick, Anantara, InterContinental, and others.

While Hua Hin’s beach is not as visually impressive as Koh Samet or Koh Larn in terms of water clarity, the overall destination has a more upscale and refined atmosphere. It attracts travelers who value comfort, service quality, and calm surroundings rather than snorkeling or active beach swimming.

We usually recommend Hua Hin for:

  • Senior travelers
  • Couples seeking relaxation
  • Guests focused on resort experiences rather than sea swimming
  • Travelers looking for luxury accommodation at competitive prices during both high and low seasons

At Royal Vacation, We don’t believe there is one “perfect” beach destination for everyone. Each traveler has different expectations, budgets, and travel styles. That is why we always customize our recommendations based on real operational experience and guest preferences.

However, based on our long-term work with clients, resort partners, and on-ground inspections:

  • Koh Samet remains our top choice
  • Pattaya & Jomtien offer the best balance of accessibility and activities
  • Hua Hin is ideal for upscale, resort-focused stays
