Best day trips from Bangkok: Our Most Recommended Excursions

Best day trips from Bangkok: Our Most Recommended Excursions

Bangkok is a city with endless things to do, but some of the best experiences in Thailand can be found just outside of Bangkok. Whether you are looking for a half day or full day trip, you can find many different things to do and see nearby Bangkok – from ancient kingdoms to national parks and wildlife spotting to floating markets. We have spent years curating day trips from Bangkok that go beyond the surface, pairing the right experiences with knowledgeable local guides to ensure every excursion is truly memorable. The following selection represents some of our most recommended journeys from the city, each offering something we think is truly worth making time for.

Bangkok temples and canal tour

wat arun during sunset

For those looking to experience the very heart of Thailand without venturing far from the capital, a full-day Bangkok temples and canal tour is an excellent choice. There are many temples in Bangkok, it can be hard for visitors to know exactly where to go and what is worth seeing, and it can be especially hard for families with young children. This is why we focus on the temples we consider as unskippable in Bangkok. During this tour you will begin your morning at the Grand Palace, the centuries-old seat of the Thai monarchy and the revered Emerald Buddha, one of the most spiritually significant icons in the country. From there, a short walk leads to Wat Pho, Bangkok’s largest temple complex and home to the breathtaking 46-metre reclining Buddha.

As the afternoon unfolds, a traditional longtail boat will allow you to experience the city’s historic canal network, a side of Bangkok that most visitors never see. Here you will pass by stilted wooden homes, floating vendors, and temples that have remained largely unchanged for generations. This is a completely different, quieter and more traditional side to Bangkok just in the heart of the city. During the tour we also make a stop by the Royal Barge Museum.

The day concludes at Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, rising dramatically along the banks of the Chao Phraya River and offering some of the most striking views in Thailand. This is a tour we recommend to every traveller visiting Bangkok for the first time.

Exploring Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya tour

An hour north of Bangkok lies Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once stood among the most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia. A full day here is a journey through centuries of history, with ancient temple spires, Buddha statues, and ancient ruins like Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, and Wat Mahathat. There is also Wat Lokayasutharam, where a large reclining Buddha lies peacefully in the open air, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, whose Khmer-style towers rising along the riverbank remain one of the most striking sights in the country. If you are interested in further exploring Ayutthaya we offer trip add-ons that include Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, the former complex that was used by the Thai monarchy. Another option we offer is driving to Ayutthaya, exploring, and then returning by river cruise, allowing guests to explore the ancient capital from both land and water.

For travellers who prefer to explore at their own pace, the Ayutthaya bike tour is another adventurous alternative, arriving by road and then taking a bike for a full day of cycling through quiet villages, rice fields, and ancient ruins. This is a day trip from Bangkok that suits history lovers, curious travellers, and anyone who wants to understand another side of Thailand.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Railway Market

For a day trip from Bangkok that feels unlike anything else, the combination of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Maeklong Railway Market consists of two of Thailand’s most iconic and colourful market experiences back to back. Located in Ratchaburi Province, Damnoen Saduak is the most visited floating market in the country. On this tour we rent a traditional boat that allows visitors to shop while being right on the canals, allowing them to experience the traditional way of shopping in Thailand. Here, you will see fresh tropical fruits, traditional bowls of noodles, handcrafted souvenirs, and more sold boat by boat.

The next stop is Maeklong Railway Market, one of the most memorable markets in Thailand. Here, fresh produce, street food, and local goods are laid out in neat rows directly along an active railway track, and several times a day the vendors calmly clear their displays as a full-size train passes within inches of the stalls before setting everything back up moments later. While this is normal and considered unremarkable in Thailand, visitors usually find that it is the kind of scene that really sticks with them. This is a day trip from Bangkok we recommend to anyone looking to explore some of the most iconic and memorable markets in Thailand, giving you a real feel for local life and traditions. For those open to extending the trip further, we recommend finishing the afternoon at Amphawa Floating Market, another one of the most popular and memorable markets in Bangkok.

Visit the Ancient City & Erawan Museum

Located in the southeast of Bangkok in Samut Prakan Province, the Ancient City, known in Thai as Mueang Boran, is unlike any museum you will find anywhere else in the world. Spread across a vast park shaped in the outline of Thailand itself, the site brings together more than 100 scaled reconstructions and relocated historical structures from every corner of the country, from the temples of Chiang Mai and the ruins of Sukhothai. We recommend at least a few hours here, best explored by bicycle or tram as you move from one structure to the next.

The visit continues at the nearby Erawan Museum, a landmark that is impossible to miss, a towering three-headed elephant standing over 40 metres high, where an extraordinary collection of antiques, ceramics, and religious art can be found across three floors that represent the underworld, the earth, and the heavens.

Together, these two sites offer an incredible dive into Thai history, art, and spiritual tradition that few single days can match. This is a trip we recommend to travellers who want to understand Thailand’s heritage in a way that goes beyond the standard temple visit.

Kanchanaburi & Erawan Falls

Located around two and a half hours west of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is one of those rare destinations that combines breathtaking natural scenery with some of the most significant history in Southeast Asia — and this full-day tour covers both in a way that allows you to fully explore and take in both.

The morning tour begins at Erawan National Park, where one of our most recommended waterfalls in Thailand is located. Erawan waterfalls consist of seven levels, where you can climb from one to another. We time the visit to arrive before the crowds, giving you the chance to swim beneath the falls at their most peaceful, one of the more memorable moments this tour has to offer.

In the afternoon the tone of the day shifts as we continue into Kanchanaburi town, where the history of the Second World War comes into sharp focus. The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre tells the story of the Death Railway in detail, built under brutal conditions by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers, while the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is a quiet and sobering space for reflection and true understanding of this aspect of Thai history. As the day draws to a close, the journey leads to the historic Bridge on the River Kwai, an enduring symbol of the region’s past, inviting a slower pace and quiet reflection. We recommend this tour to every traveller passing through Bangkok who has a day to spare, history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to experience two completely different sides of Thailand that most itineraries never manage to bring together in a single day.

Khao Yai National Park full day

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest national parks in Southeast Asia, Khao Yai is roughly two and a half hours northeast of Bangkok and is one of the most rewarding full day escapes from the capital. The park is home to dense tropical forest, freely roaming elephants, and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand. Our tour starts at Haew Suwat, a powerful cascade set deep in the jungle that famously featured in the filming of The Beach. Here you can spot giant squirrels, lizards, and monkeys. Afterwards we head to Haew Narok, the park’s largest and most dramatic waterfall dropping nearly 150 metres through the forest. Both of these waterfalls are two of our most recommended waterfalls in Thailand. On the way to Haew Narok you might spot elephants crossing the road. One of the things we love about Khao Yai is that wildlife sightings here are truly authentic, with elephants just roaming around, comfortable in their natural home and environment. Here, you might even be able to spot gibbons jumping from one tree to another.

After exploring both waterfalls and spotting elephants, we take a break by the lake, where guests are served lunch and sparkling wine. After lunch, we take guests to a view point in Khao Yai National Park where you can see the entire park, a spot we always suggest for the best photographs. The Great Hornbill, one of Thailand’s most striking birds, can also be seen from this viewpoint. This is a full day trip from Bangkok we recommend to nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to see Thailand at its most wild and unspoiled.

Half day tour to Koh Kret

A short drive north of Bangkok leads to one of the city’s best-kept secrets, Koh Kret, a small island sitting in a bend of the Chao Phraya River that has remained untouched by modern tourism. Accessible only by boat, this car-free island is home to the Mon people, one of Thailand’s oldest ethnic communities, whose traditions in pottery-making, temple building, and riverside living have been carefully preserved here for generations.
During our tour here we spend the morning wandering the island’s narrow footpaths, browsing stalls selling handmade terracotta pottery and traditional Mon sweets. Afterwards, we take guests to a traditional pottery workshop, where they can learn the ancient techniques that have belonged to this island for generations. Afterwards, we take guests to lunch at a riverfront restaurant. The pace here is relaxed and laid back, the scenery and nature beautiful, and the contrast with the energy of central Bangkok is shocking. For travellers who want to step outside the usual tourist trail and experience a side of Thai culture that few visitors take the time to discover, a half day on Koh Kret is one we always recommend.

Half day tour to Bang Krachao

Sitting just across the Chao Phraya River from the heart of Bangkok, Bang Krachao is perhaps the city’s most surprising escape. Also referred to as the “Green Lung of Bangkok”, this island feels like a complete nature escape, a world away from the busy and chaotic streets of Bangkok despite being so close. With shaded cycling paths winding through mangrove forests the most rewarding way to explore is by bicycle. While cycling you can also explore Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden, one of the finest green spaces in the Bangkok area. Along the way, small local markets offer fresh fruit, Thai snacks, and a glimpse into the kind of unhurried neighbourhood life that the city centre left behind long ago. There is also Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market which is on every weekend for those looking for a market with a true local feel. For those who want temples with a true local feel, Bang Krachao is a great place to explore. This is a half day tour we recommend to travellers who want to see a quieter, greener side of Bangkok without having to travel very far from the city.

Visit an elephant sanctuary

For many travellers, spending a day with elephants in an ethical and natural setting is one of the most meaningful experiences Thailand has to offer, and there are excellent options within easy reach of Bangkok. Bangkok Elephant Park and Living Green Elephant Sanctuary are among the closest sanctuaries to the capital, both committed to the responsible care of elephants in a way that prioritises the animals’ wellbeing over performance or entertainment. A day at either sanctuary is led by education, with visitors learning what they need to know about Asian elephants and the efforts being made to rescue and rehabilitate elephants. Afterwards,  visitors help with food preparation like rice balls (a well-loved treat for elephants), feeding the elephants, and bathing them in mud and fresh water afterwards. There are no riding shows or entertainment acts here, just an authentic and ethical encounter with elephants.

The day trips listed here are among those we recommend most often to our guests,  each one chosen for what it consistently delivers to the travellers we work with. Thailand rewards those who venture beyond the obvious, and the region surrounding the capital has more to offer than most visitors realise. Whether you are looking for a nature escape or would like to learn more about Thai history and culture, there is something for every traveller. If you’re planning a full or half day trip from Bangkok and would like to book one or more of these trips, our team is ready and happy to assist.
